This week's submission, by Carrie Haugen, as submitted for publication in the Tofield Mercury.

Agent Nicole and Dogspaw

Agent Nicole and associates visited the Tofield Library Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Nicole comes from Dogspaw out of Edmonton, which is a multipurpose facility that offers almost everything from dog and cat daycare, professional dog training, grooming, massage and a unique retail store. PAWS for Life is a rescue group that works in the same facility. The agents at Tofield Library have been fundraising and collecting needed supplies for PAWS (protecting animals with safety) since June. The agents have raised over $100 for PAWS and will continue to raise money for the group until the end of August, anyone interested in donating either money or pet supplies (food, old blankest, cat litter or toys) please drop it off at the Tofield Library by August 17th.

The agents at the Tofield Library were excited to see Agent Nicole and her dogs. The presentation focused on dog safety and behaviour. The children were given information on how to tell if a dog wants to meet you and the proper way of approaching a dog. Nicole advised the children never to approach a dog without permission from the owner or an unattended dog. Secondly, the agents were shown pictures of different dogs and had to decide if that dog was a happy dog who wanted to meet them or if it just wanted to be left alone. Next, Tia, the mascot came out and the children were able to practice their body reading skills and once they were able to see the difference between a happy friendly dog and a dog that wants to be left alone they were able to meet the real dogs. The dogs came out one by one and the agents were able to meet several different dogs of all breeds.
